War Funded
Recently, the House of Representatives took action to fund the war in Iraq. Republican supporters of Bush provided the winning margin in a 268 -155 vote to provide $126 billion to fund our military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan into next year.
A majority of Democrats opposed the Iraq funding bill, however many agreed to a compromise in order to overcome Republican resistance to the GI Bill’s college benefits, which doubled college aid for returning troops and a 13 week extension of unemployment checks for those whose benefits have run out.
Shortly there after an organization calling itself Democrats.com issued the following e-mail entitled:
“No More Betrayals: Let’s Replace the Bush Democrats.”
“On Thursday and Friday, the American people were betrayed twice by House ‘Democratic’ Leader Steny Hoyer and his Bush Democrats.
“On Thursday, 80 Bush Democrats voted to give George Bush another $163 billion to occupy Iraq and plunder its oil for another year, even though 68% of Americans want to bring our troops safely home this year.
“And on Friday, 105 Bush Democrats voted to give immunity to George Bush and the telecoms for illegally wiretapping American citizens even before 9/11, and to allow Bush and the telecoms to keep doing it, thereby shredding the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution.”
“With your support, we will replace each one with an ‘Aggressive Progressive’ Democrat who will bring our troops home from Iraq and fulfill their solemn oaths to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’”
****This so called Democratic organization failed to mention that the Democratic leadership in the House were able to make a compromise, which was approved by the White House, in order to doubled college aid for returning troops and provide 13 week of additional unemployment checks for those whose benefits have run out.
Delhi’s representative in the House, Kirsten Gillibrand voted for those bills. She is not a “Bush Democrat,” but is attempting to be reelected in a congressional district, which is overwhelmingly Republican. Gillibrand recognizes that many of those constituents, who voted for her 2 years ago, would not vote for her again if she voted to cut off funding for troops in the field. Getting our troops out of Iraq will only happen after Obama is elected Commander-in-Chief.
