A Core Belief
America has an enormous cleanup job ahead and our country can’t afford a progressive congressional agenda being bogged down by an obstructionist Republican in the White House, who is coupled to the radical ideology of Bush.
The damage that Bush and the Republican party have done to this country is so immense, that nothing short of sweeping reforms will get America back on the right track again. The time has come for us to advance the cause of economic justice, and help this country live up to its highest ideals.
The next president will have to find a way to provide coverage for 47 million Americans without health insurance, drastically reduce our dependence on oil, and write a more equitable tax code to restore fairness and opportunity to our economy. These reforms would constitute the biggest domestic changes America has attempted since Medicare and Medicaid were created in the 1960s.
A core belief of the Democratic party has been that as citizens and as a government, we have a moral responsibility to take care of each other when times are as tough.
The cynicism of the Bush years have torn apart that compact, and left us with a government indifferent to the 37 million people in poverty, our public schools crumbling , and a war without end. Everywhere people are struggling to survive in this failing economy. They can’t afford to pay their bills for food and gas and healthcare. They’re losing their jobs and losing their homes. All the Republican party has to offer are more tax cuts for those who need them least.
The only way to turn things around is to elect a Democratic president and a greater majority for Democrats in the Senate. In the past year it has become obvious that 51 Senate seats aren’t enough, because Republicans can still obstruct the change we need in this country.
The Bush regime and and his enablers in Congress have spent the past seven years turning their backs on fundamental American ideals. They have destroyed our reputation around the world with a misguided war in Iraq. They have abandoned the American Dream to pursue a trickle-down economic policy that puts millionaires and special interests first, and leaves the rest of Americans out in the cold.
We must put a stop to this by electing a Democratic president and a stronger Democratic majority in Congress.
