Very Strange
Yesterday, I received a very strange letter from Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand dated Nov. 7th. It was posted to the correct name and address. It began:
“Dear Mr. O’Leary,
Thank you for contacting me about visiting your unit during my recent trip to Iraq.
I would have appreciated the opportunity to visit with you and your unit, and I asked repeatedly to meet with service members from my district and our state, but because of strict security guidelines, I was told that any unscheduled visits to individual units would not be allowed. The trip was organized by the military and there was no allowance for Members of Congress to deviate from the set schedule....”
My reply of Nov. 15th stated:
Dear Rep. Gillibrand,
Per your letter of Nov. 7th, I have never contacted you regarding your failure to visit my or any other unit in Iraq.
I’ve never been to Iraq and the closest I came was Istanbul in 1954, with the Fleet Marine Force. I’m 72 years old and although our military is pressed for new recruits, I doubt that I would be acceptable cannon fodder for the military industrial complex, because of my antiwar sentiments.
As far as staying in contact with your office, it’s quite possible that, I express my concerns via e-mails more than any other of your constituents. However, they are most likely deleted by your staff.
I write monthly letters to nearly every newspaper within 80 miles of Delhi. My concern is that since, these strong views have resulted in ill-tempered rebuttals, anonymous letters and phone calls, I suspect some dirty trick is underway. I have not and will not contact you by snail mail, but may resort to a phone call.
You had better pay attention, because a recent rebuttal letter in the Walton Reporter referred to me as a “mad dog partisan.” :-)
Sincerely,
Jim O’Leary

P.S. The letter published in the Times Herald Record this morning was sent by this mad dog partisan.
