"It is our duty, all of us, everyone who cares to reverse the national decline of our knowledge and understanding of history, and to renew a true appreciation of this great country, why it became great and what will keep it so." -- Sen. Robert Byrd

Propaganda Offensive

Bush intends to keep the war in Iraq going until he can dump it on his successor. He’s been forced to recycle the same lies that were used to sell the invasion of Iraq.

In a speech on June 28, Bush referred to al Qaeda 27 times, but avoided mentioning the sectarian violence, which is at the heart of the Iraqi civil war, because our military is powerless to stop it. Our military is following Bush's script verbatim. In May, there were 9 references to al Qaeda in a military news releases, but in late June, al Qaeda was mentioned 33 times.

The Bush regime’s stated purpose for the occupation was to create: “an Iraq that can govern itself, sustain itself and defend itself ... and an Iraqi army that would stand up so we could stand down.”

That is not happening. Therefore, a new mission is necessary. The newest propaganda is: “Victory is defeating al Qaeda, which continues to be the chief organizer of mayhem within Iraq.” And according to Bush: “the ones who attacked us in America on September the 11th.” However, al Qaeda didn’t exist in Iraq, until after our invasion in 2003.

ABC News reported that al Qaeda in Iraq may be responsible for no more than 15 percent of the attacks in Iraq. Bob Woodward wrote in The Washington Post, that CIA director Michael Hayden told Bush last November that al Qaeda was only the fifth most pressing threat in Iraq, after the insurgency, sectarian strife, criminality and general anarchy.

Al Qaeda operates with impunity out of Pakistan. However, Bush has never allowed facts get in the way of his political agenda. The Republican agenda is to avoid taking responsibility for losing a war and it doesn’t matter how many more Americans are tossed into its carnage.
