"It is our duty, all of us, everyone who cares to reverse the national decline of our knowledge and understanding of history, and to renew a true appreciation of this great country, why it became great and what will keep it so." -- Sen. Robert Byrd

Bob Dole purge Congressional Records!

From Crawford Texas, Bob Dole suggested that John Kerry apologize for testimony before Congress about alleged atrocities during the Vietnam War. During the week of April 19,1971, Senator Fulbright asked Kerry, as a member of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A few select statements from that testimony were used in a deceitful political ad by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth to discredit Kerry’s service in Vietnam. In his testimony Kerry was repeating part of three days of testimony voluntarily given by over 150 veterans at the Winter Soldiers Investigation, which convened on January 31, 1971. (Read for yourself on the internet) Senator Hatfield had already placed the testimony in the Congressional Record, on April 6, 1971, (note the date of Kerry's testimony) Quoting Hatfield: "The testimony and allegations raised by the experiences of these veterans includes charges regarding the torture and murder of suspects and prisoners of war captured by Americans and South Vietnamese forces; the wanton killing of innocent, unarmed civilians; the brutalization and rape of women in the villages.... I ask unanimous consent that the testimony presented by over 100 honorably discharged veterans in Detroit be placed in the Congressional Record."

Dole might want to have the Congressional Record purged of this testimony and ask Colin Powell to apologize for revealing in "My American Journey" the My Lai atrocity, when American soldiers "herded 347 old man, women, children and even babies into a ditch and shot them." The Pentagon and some Republicans are very adept practitioners of revisionist history.

The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are described by Senator John McCain as "dishonest and dishonorable." Dole on the other hand describes Kerry’s wounds as "superficial," and ignores the fact that for his second tour of duty Kerry volunteered for very hazardous duty on a Swift Boat. Former Democratic Senator and triple amputee Max Cleland would never lower himself by referring to Mr. Dole's wounds as "superficial." Dole has dishonored himself and proven that he will never again rise above the role of a partisan character assassin.
